Learn to surf in San Felipe: waves without the crowds
Local perspective: written by the AmanDagat team in San Felipe, Zambales · Updated August 2026
San Felipe's quiet shoreline hides one of Luzon's friendliest places to stand on a board for the first time — a gentle river-mouth break, glassy mornings, and empty water. No queues for waves, no scene. Just you, a board, and the South China Sea.

When to go
The waves here are at their gentlest from March to early June — small, clean, forgiving rollers that are perfect for a first lesson. The rainy months from July to October bring bigger swells for those chasing more. Whatever the season, aim for a morning session between 6 and 9 AM, before the onshore wind picks up and while the light is soft and golden.
Boards, lessons, and what it costs
You don't need to bring anything. Along the San Felipe shore, soft-top boards rent for around ₱200–300 per hour, and a one-hour session with a local instructor runs about ₱400–600 per hour including the board. Local instructors can help first-timers get comfortable on a board and understand the break. On weekends, go early for the calmest water.
The quiet-coast rhythm
This stretch of Zambales runs on a slower clock. Surf while the water is glass, then spend the heat of the day in your own pool. Coffee on the shore at golden hour, wood-fired pizza at A’Züla, and a sky full of stars through your dome window. No crowds, no noise — that's the whole point of coming here.
Make a weekend of it
The classic plan from Manila: leave Friday afternoon, arrive in San Felipe for sunset, surf Saturday morning while the water is glassy, spend the afternoon by your own pool, and catch one more session Sunday before the drive home. Three and a half hours from the city, and you've had a whole other life in between.
